FO3: Making interiors darker, some examples
by Wuphon's Reach
The first image is of the Arlington Public Library Lobby where I set the cell ambient light level to a moderately bright 20:15:22 RGB. This is because when you first enter the lobby, you will get sucked into a conversation with the scribe. Plus there are quite a few lights here, so it should be moderately bright.
This next screenshot is from Farragut West Station and shows the "glowing model" problem (right side of image). The ambient here is 8:7:7 RGB, which is fairly dark. But the typewriter model glows in the dark, which can be a bit disconcerting. The only solution is to brighten up this cell even more and give up on some of the moodiness.
Another pair from Farragut West Station with the same ambient of 8:7:7 RGB. The first shows the default lighting, the second shows the use of "Nightvision Goggles - Powered" in the 2X brightness mode. I like the mood set here at 8:7:7, so even though there's a glowing typewriter model, I'm going to leave it at this brightness.
Next we have the darker Marigold Station. Ambient is set to 5:5:7. It's dark, but not totally dark, and there's not a lot of light sources. Could be a bit challenging for a young player without night vision goggles. But it's just bright enough that you can feel your way along. Might be good to bump this up to 7:7:10.
Now we move over to the Museum of Technology where I went with a brighter ambient light level of 9:10:15 RGB. This is the top of the Delta IX rocket exhibit. The 3rd image is with the "Pipboy Light Mod, Grey, 3X Range" turned on.
Here is the Super-Duper Mart near Megaton. A location that players tend to visit very early in the game. I wanted it dark, but not pitch black, so the ambient ended up at 10:10:10 RGB.
Last, we have the Tenleytown/Friendship Station with an ambient of 5:7:8, which is about middle of the road. If you examine the first image very closely, you can just make out that there is Brotherhood of Steel graffiti on the wall. That's key for fun-factor, because it's dark enough that you'll want to risk turning on a light to see better what is being hinted at.
